For most of the '90s, Will Oldham was the mastermind of Palace Music, a shambling, country-tinged indie rock group that recorded under a variety of names. The only constant in Palace was Oldham, and he would often record as a solo artist under the Palace name. That fact made his decision to retire the Palace name in 1997 somewhat baffling, since for all intents and purposes, he was the band. More

The music industry fails to understand that a primary reason that consumers illegally share music files is that they want insurance against the music industry itself. File sharing is as much about risk sharing as it is about the theft of value. Technology makes file swapping possible - but the music industry's business model, which is at odds with the implicit contract it signs with listeners, is what makes it probable.

The contract between record labels and music listeners follows basic economics: The labels assume market risk in exchange for value. They take on the risk of talent search, artist development, and distribution costs, in exchange for profits... More

Independent record labels are fighting to have their names removed from the list of members posted on the Recording Industry Association of America's Web site. Many of the indie labels say they are not RIAA members. Some worry that the association with the music industry's crackdown on file sharers will hurt their image with fans. Joel Rose of member station WHYY reports. More

The conzentrationcamps raised lots of questions among the journalist, therefor some of them were allowed to visit the camp. There was also a feature on a nazi-controlled radio station.

According to the radio propaganda feature, the prisoners were "people bewitched by communism"

One Minute Massacre, the second release from Soulseek Records, is built from a simple concept: each artist creates 1-2 minutes of music which is then passed to the next artist, who smoothly (or not so smoothly) picks up from the end and attaches another 1-2 minutes of his or her own. Two sets, each totaling roughly a half hour of continual sonic mutation.

The One Minute Massacre is the second CD release from Soulseek Records.

Somewhere in East London the turntables are motionless. The only thing spinning is a chorus of iPod hard drives, or the ceiling (if you're friends with the bartender).

The club's name is Dreambagsjaguarshoes and the event is called noWax. The concept for noWax is simple: MP3s, not wax. iPods, not decks. On noWax nights, mp3js bring their iPods and wait for the automated projector above the DJ booth to flash their number. Then they plug-in and mix three songs back-to-back against another mp3j. Words sometimes fail Carla Bozulich. That would incapacitate most singer-songwriters, but the former frontwoman of Ethyl Meatplow and Geraldine Fibbers has the taste and tools to turn such a seeming shortfall into an artistic asset. Although she hadn't recorded a band album since the final Fibbers CD, the result is a masterpiece in its own right, driven by Bozulich's powerful vocals and fleshed out by the innovative guitar work of Nels Cline and a postmodern country/jazz/rock band that includes violinist Jenny Scheinman, bassist Devin Hoff and drummer Scott Amendola.

The story of the "Exploding Whale" is one of my favourite weird stories that realy happend.

Dave Barry 1990: I am absolutely not making this incident up; in fact I have it all on videotape. The tape is from a local TV news show in Oregon, which sent a reporter out to cover the removal of a 45-foot, eight-ton dead whale that washed up on the beach. The responsibility for getting rid of the carcass was placed upon the Oregon State Highway Division, apparently on the theory that highways and whales are very similar in the sense of being large objects.

So anyway, the highway engineers hit upon the plan -- remember, I am not making this up -- of blowing up the whale with dynamite. The thinking here was that the whale would be blown into small pieces, which would be eaten by sea gulls, and that would be that. A textbook whale removal.

So they moved the spectators back up the beach, put a half-ton of dynamite next to the whale and set it off. I am probably not guilty of understatement when I say that what follows, on the videotape, is the most wonderful event in the history of the universe. First you see the whale carcass disappear in a huge blast of smoke and flame. Then you hear the happy spectators shouting "Yayy!" and "Whee!" Then, suddenly, the crowd's tone changes. You hear a new sound like "splud." You hear a woman's voice shouting "Here come pieces of... MY GOD!" Something smears the camera lens.

Later, the reporter explains: "The humor of the entire situation suddenly gave way to a run for survival as huge chunks of whale blubber fell everywhere." One piece caved in the roof of a car parked more than a quarter of a mile away. Remaining on the beach were several rotting whale sectors the size of condominium units. There was no sign of the sea gulls, who had no doubt permanently relocated in Brazil. This is a very sobering videotape. Here at the institute we watch it often, especially at parties. But this is no time for gaiety. This is a time to get hold of the folks at the Oregon State Highway division and ask them, when they get done cleaning up the beaches, to give us an estimate on the US Capitol.

What is data bending? Down at the intersection of electronic and experimental is an idea called data bending. It is the abuse of software to produce new sound. Software including programs, files and raw data of all kinds. Why do it? Good question. It's probably some mix of the following: (a) the joy of new and unexpected sound, (b) the possibility of taking data that has a particular meaning and translating it into sound - an image file, for example, (c) the overriding of cold, byte-perfect computer logic, (d) it's fun to fuck with things.

A cousin of data bending is circuit bending - the hardware equivalent. Electronic devices of all kinds are hacked to produce new results. More

"Nestune" is a circuit bent Famicom (Asian nintendo entertainment system) and allows manual override of its internal circuitry to create visual and auditory corruption. Nestune also excepts audio signals to control various circuitry acting like an 8bit audio visualizer. More

cementimental is another circuit bender with lot's of mp3 and video files on his webpage.

Tim Hecker is considered one of the most talented and inventive in Canada's new breed of electronic musicians. Whereas his contemporaries often work within the confines of recognizable genres, critics and peers alike have been quick to note that Hecker's work has grown increasingly original and unclassifiable.

Musically, Hecker has strong ties to the Montreal indie and experimental communites. He has toured with GY!BE and is currently recording with Fly Pan Am. He has also collaborated with artists such as Martin Tetrault and Christof Migone. "Radio Amor" is his most accessible work to date, and should find admirers in both the disparate electronic and indie-rock communities. More

The Sea and Cake was a post-rock supergroup of sorts comprised of luminaries from the Chicago independent scene. The band was led by singer/guitarist Sam Prekop, who, along with bassist Eric Claridge, was an alumnus of the frequently brilliant Shrimp Boat. After that group's dissolution, Prekop and Claridge were offered the opportunity to embark on a new project and hastily recruited ex-Coctails guitarist Archer Prewitt and Tortoise drummer John McEntire before entering the studio. Sydney-based jazz trio Triosk and Jan Jelinek from Berlin have opened up a common equation. In musical terms, their joint album "1+3+1" does not make 5, but only one thing: sense. And the title reflects their production method: Jelinek mails selected samples and textures to Australia, Triosk use these as a basis for composition and recording, the enhanced material then returns to Berlin for Jelinek to finalise.
