From the great CLick Opera: Chris Watson, who's featured in an Invisible Jukebox in the September issue of The Wire, was one of the three original members of Cabaret Voltaire. He left in 1981 to work on sound for television and radio, specialising in field recordings of birds, mammals and insects. Even while working on mainstream BBC TV series with David Attenborough he continued to make more experimental tape collages with Andrew Mackenzie of The Hafler Trio. He's released three solo albums of wildlife sounds on the Touch label and currently has a sound installation featuring the sounds of Mexican railways running in Mexico City. More
LCD Soundsystem debuted with Losing My Edge, a single that became one of the most talked-about indie releases of 2002. A self-effacing spoof of the outrageous pissing contests that often occur whenever music geeks cross paths ("I was there at the first Can show in Cologne," etc.) laid over a puttering electronic beat with the occasional bursts of discoid clatter, the track was also one of the first released on the DFA label. Early this year, musician Joanna Newsom, opened some shows for Devendra Banhart. Word soon spread around that this was a musician to check out. The 21-year old harpist Joanna Newsom grew up in Nevada City, California. She had been in bands before and had been writing songs, but never before had she played her songs in public in front of a large audience. The first shows were such a success that Joanna was invited to play with Bonnie Prince Billy and Cat Power.Read more

"Chris Leary is undoubtedly one of the most promising young talent of the British electronic scene of today. After propagating his music via the Internet for some years, he has, in the last couple of years, started to get more noticed. In recent months, his work has appeared on countless compilations, and after months of wait, his first album, A Midsummer Nice Dream, is finally about to be released." Read more
The high cost of getting permission to use archival footage and photos threatens to put makers of documentaries out of business.
As Americans commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy today, no television channel will be broadcasting the documentary series Eyes on the Prize. Produced in the 1980s and widely considered the most important encapsulation of the American civil-rights movement on video, the documentary series can no longer be broadcast or sold anywhere.
From sfburning.com "AFRIRAMPO is a Japanese female wildcat duet-cute, loud and a little crass. Their over all sound oscillates between wild and loose to tight and complex arrangements. Like a rock supernova caught in a perpetual loop, exploding and imploding upon itself. This is all done with minimal gear: vocals, guitar and drums." More + MP3 download
From The Wikipedia.org: The Yes Men are a group of culture jamming activists who practice what they call "identity correction". They pretend to be powerful people and organizations and then use their newfound authority to espouse what they think those groups really believe, or in some cases what they think the groups should believe. Its two leading members are Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonano, but they are assisted by numerous people across the globe.
The Yes Men's most famous prank is placing a "corrected" WTO website at gatt.org (GATT is the treaty that led to the WTO). The fake site began to receive real emails from confused visitors, including invitations to address various elite groups on behalf of the WTO, which they obligingly took up. More
first appeared on the scene in 1997 with a provocative demand. zeitkratzer finishes with the ensemble musicians’ group model and brings new modes of artistic collaboration to fruition. zeitkratzer says goodbye to the standard repertoire of the past century and welcomes the normality of the composer/performer which has been practiced for centuries from Bach to Webern. zeitkratzer work as and with componists, makes pacts with sound sculptors, electronic avantgardists, body artists, rockstars, video- and light sculptors, ... zeitkratzer follows the ears with utmost consistency: the eyes hear as well.
Photovoltaik
Maschinenbau Mannheim

Tanakh is a layering of sound and structure that combines songwriting sensibilty and improvisational abstractions that are as thick and rich as they are minimalist. These two seemingly opposed forms fluidly combine to forge dark sweet lulling gypsy melodies dug from middle-eastern sands that have been knuckled across Appalachian washboards that shadow the city in which they live. Annapurna: Memories in Sound by Aaron and Bronwyn Ximm
From the Annapurna webpage:
One of the more memorable parts of my honeymoon was trekking the Annapurna Circuit in central Nepal with my wife Bronwyn.
For three weeks, we walked: up one valley, over a 17,500' pass, and down another, through dozens of towns and climate zones.
Annapurna: Memories in Sound is a thirty-eight minute audio program. It's a duet between Bronwyn's narration and my soundscape, composed of vignettes which evoke particular experiences from our trek with words and field recordings. The vignettes are presented in roughly chronological order: as you listen, you are walking with us around the Annapurna Circuit, as it was in the spring of 2001.Read more + download

Based out of the sheriff-friendly town of Nottingham, England, the duo of Simon Mills and Neil "Nail" Tolliday met as housemates and formed the flippantly picturesque Bent -- a group earmarking a page somewhere between an early morning Air and a less cacophonic Bentley Rhythm Ace. Sonically, the band's primary influence boils down to becoming disillusioned with house music and hoarding mounds of bad records. Lo-culture samples accessorize jazz, rock, and hip-hop pulses with a heady sense of ironic piss-taking while adolescent titles like the perverted "Welly Top Mary" give the indication of a band trying to resurrect majesty in even the most risible of sources. By 2000, Bent released their sleeper -- and warmly received -- debut album, Programmed to Love, which helped pave the way for the band earning a nomination for Best Newcomer at the same year's Muzik Awards.
