Weiter

A podcast series from Smithsonian Folkways and CKUA Radio
folkways.si.edu: "This series of 24 one-hour programs explores the remarkable collection of music, spoken word, and sound recordings that make up Folkways Records (now at the Smithsonian as Smithsonian Folkways Recordings). The music of modern day giants like Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Ani Difranco is interwoven with original Folkways recordings to demonstrate the lasting legacy that Folkways Records has on popular music. Recent and archival interviews with Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Mickey Hart, Studs Terkel, and others help reveal the remarkable human stories behind this equally remarkable collection. The series was produced by CKUA Radio in Alberta, Canada and originally aired in 1999." RSS Feed
pitchforkmedia.com: "Dylan Carlson started Earth in Seattle in 1990, releasing four albums of heavy drone-metal before taking a break 1996. Edwin Pouncey writes for British music magazine Wire and occasionally contributes comic strip, “Trip or Squeek” to its back pages. In February 2005, Pouncey spilled some ink on one of his “guilty pleasures,” Black Metal and its ilk. Under the guise of Savage Pencil, Pouncey has produced some intriguing artwork for the Wire’s “Primer” feature, and has exhibited numerous times, notably the “Artfang” exhibit, a series of prints and drawings inspired by and speaking to the music of Black Metal. Here, Stylus writer Stewart Voegtlin and Pouncey discuss the aforementioned, Pouncey’s artistic influences, his love of Mad Magazine, the old masters and Abruptum. And while the man has no plans on creating a coffee table book of his work, he is currently working on a website." Read the whole interview
wnyc.org: "In 1999, an Iraqi refugee code-named Curveball told German intelligence agents that Saddam Hussein had produced mobile biological weapons factories. Even though Curveball’s information seemed dubious, it became the centerpiece in the Bush administration’s case for war. Los Angeles Times correspondent Bob Drogin argues that the White House and the CIA didn’t care if the source was credible or not, because they had already made up their minds to go to war. His book is <a href="www.amazon.com" title="Order "Curveball" from Amazon.com">Curveball.
hyperdubrecords: "After the surprise success of his self-titled, low-key debut on Hyperdub , Burial returns with an eagerly awaited follow up album, ‘Untrue’. The new record is weird soul music, hypersoul, lovingly processing spectral female voices into vaporised R&B and smudged 2step garage. Voices are blurred, smeared, pitched up, pitched down and pitch bent until their content becomes irrelevant and they whisper their saccharin sweet nothings into the void." Read the whole interview
wikipedia.org: "Manorexia is an experimental instrumental project of composer J. G. Thirlwell (primarily of Foetus). Manorexia was formed in 2001.
As opposed to Thirlwell's other instrumental group, Steroid Maximus, Manorexia features no collaborators and eschews musical structure for a more free-form and spontaneous approach. The results are often described as cinematic and textural. To date all albums have been released on Thirlwell's own Ectopic Ents label and have been sold only at concerts or via the Official Foetus Website." Read on
