wsj.com: Times have been hard at Scotti's Record Shops in northern New Jersey. For a while customers weren't coming in like they used to -- too busy, most likely, downloading music onto their MP3 players. The teenagers who did show up would often whisper to each other, "Don't buy that. I can burn it for you."

But co-owners and brothers Jeff and Gary Scotti didn't want to simply ignore the changes digital music was bringing to their business. "We don't want to "butt heads with iPod owners," as Jeff Scotti puts it. "We have to embrace them."

So, earlier this year, the four-store chain announced its new "Buy It, Burn It, Return It" policy. Customers can buy a used or new CD, take it home, listen and, if they want, burn a copy to a computer. Within 10 days, they can return the CD for 70% store credit. More

allmusic.com: Battersea-based ambient composer Robin Rimbaud, aka Scanner, takes his curious pseudonym from his compositional tool of choice; the cellphone scanner. Although only recording and releasing music since the early '90s, Rimbaud has already earned a reputation as a boundary pushing experimentalist, wedding scanned vocal samples with sparse electronics and other textural elements that underscore the degree of strain and isolation often associated with modern telecommunications technology.

"The Ramones almost single-handedly created 1970's punk rock with their fast-paced, two-minute songs inspired by horror movies and glue sniffing. But the Ramones were hardly a happy family - at least according to the documentary End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones, a critical favorite of 2004, which is now available on DVD. Today on Soundcheck, drummer Tommy Ramone talks about the turbulent life behind the scenes." Listen here

Find out as we visit with Travis Sullivan's Bjorkestra, a group that performs big band interpretations of the entire Bjork catalog. Similar in spirit, if not necessarily in inspiration is the Ed Palermo Big Band." Listen here

"Diamanda Galas ignores the traditional ways in which women are expected to sing and instead offers a cross between Dracula and Goth-rock as she takes on subjects including power, abandonment, grief and the AIDS epidemic. She returns to New York for two performances of "Defixiones, Orders from the Dead" an operatic mass which speaks of the Armenian, Assyrian, Anatolian and Pontic Greek genocides. She joins us to talk about the New York premiere. Also on the show: Rivers and Tides director Thomas Riedelsheimer drops by to discuss his new documentary on Grammy award-winning, deaf percussionist Evelyn Glennie entitled Touch the Sound." somewhere.org: "Schrei 27 (1994) Consists of several short performances over the space of twenty-seven minutes alternating extreme high-energy vocal work with absolute silence. The performances are chapters of a confession which might have been induced through a chemical or mechanical manipulation of the brain. There is a high density of speech-sound over time which is often machine-like in its velocity. The work employs the atypical speech and vocal signal processing that Galas has been researching since 1979. A co commission of the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis) and NEW AMERICAN RADIO."
