The WIRE magazine and more

Julian Cowley, The Wire 248: The music of Le Doigt De Galilee is gradual and layered. Nicholas Field builds insistently rumbling drum clouds, sustains nervy rattling strokes or scrapes metallic percussion. Jaime Fennelly adds further density with bass drum and enlivens the continuum with unassuming electronic murmurs, feedback gush and occasional penetrating shrillness.

Instrumentation and temperaments preclude smoothness, but contours and dynamics nonetheless meet and fuse in a kind of prolonged musical massage. A sexually aroused robotic figure is the pair's chosen depicted object. More Info

Comets On Fire hail from Santa Cruz, CA. The band was formed in 1999 by guitarist and vocalist Ethan Miller and longtime friend bassist Ben Flashman, who were seeking to create a rhythmically and sonically intense music that paid no attention to categorizations -- all the while being suckers for anthemic rock riffs, psychedelia, and crunching crescendos. The band came together when Flashman's pal Noel Harmonson and his echoplex entered the picture, and drummer Utrillo Kushner showed them what he could do with a drum kit. (No less an authority than Julian Cope states quite correctly that Kushner plays like two drummers thinking they are Keith Moon. More

SOUND AND THE 20th CENTURY AVANT GARDE - LONDON

From the noises of Futurism and Dada to the Silence of John Cage, a new course at the Tate Modern presents an opportunity to explore key acoustic moments of the twentieth-century avant-garde.

Lectures, listening sessions, screenings and artists' interviews will be used to explore the different ways artists have exploited the materiality of sound, with an emphasis on sound as a political tool and on the confluence between sound, film and performance.

The course will finish by considering contemporary plunderphonic outputs, effects of sampling and 'copyleft' strategies of the 'Creative Commons'.

picture of the "band" radian

„They have the all the trappings of an electronica outfit—the name, the album title (Rec.Extern), the lineage (previous releases on Mego and Rhiz), the black Powerbook, and the Vienna address. But Radian is two-thirds of a jazz band—with members on drums and upright bass alongside synthesizer and laptop. That makes Thrill Jockey a fitting home, where labelmates Tortoise and Chicago Underground also work the tension between the crackle and the hum." David Krasnow, Village Voice, 2002

Zeena Parkins sits firm as a multi-instrumentalist, composer, improviser, well-known as a pioneer of the electric harp, she has also extended the language of the acoustic harp with the inventive use of unusual playing techniques, preparations, and layers of digital and analog processing.

Ikue Mori has long been a stalwart of the New York improvisation via the post punk set. Her work has seen her evolve from drums to drum machine to laptop - how about that? Super. As a result the language she presents is as diverse as the wide range of people she has played with. Taken from Mego.at

Now, these two swinging cats have hooked up too create a delicate blend of organic acoustic and digital sources.
