Keith Fullerton Whitman has recorded and released music under a number of pseudonyms, most notably Hrvatski. Hrvatski has appeared on more compilations than you can shake a stick at and criss-crossed the globe laying down breakbeat concret for the kids. He has worked at the Forced Exposure distribution center, written about music, lectured at Ivy League universities and is a graduate of the Berklee School of Music. And Keith Fullerton Whitman runs a record label and mail order service.

"keith-hrvatski spent a few weeks in scandinavia at the end of summer 2003. on a boat coming back from a day spent on rovaer island (off of the western norwegian coast), he made this field recording with a portable minidisc and an elementally challenged (read: wet) sony ms-957 mic.

no digital processing of any kind was performed, this is the raw audio as the microphone (and the md's ATRAC compression) heard it. during a torrential downpour. quite unbelievable, really..."

While I was surfing the net to find MP3 files of Hrvatski (Keith Fullerton Whitman), I found lot's of reviews of Hrvatskis' last CD "Playthroughs". One described his music as minimalist ambience, not unlike a sonic equivalent of a Mark Rothko painting.

I don't know if everyone would agree about that, but a few links later, I found Whitman and his friend Greg Davis, standing in front of a painting by Mark Rothko.

I'm not sure, if it's really a Rothko picture, but it sure does look like one. Isn't that a big coinsidence ? Or maybe it isn't ? If you know more about the event, leading to Hrvatski standing in front of the painting, please leave a comment.

You never really quite know what to expect from Hrvatski. Born Keith Fullerton Whitman, Hrvatski seems to have two sides to his musical persona. On the one hand we have the schizoid drill 'n' bass side, which conducts experiments in percussive programming more than melody, as on his 1998 release Oiseaux 1996-1998. Among the hard abrasiveness, hints of a more emotive side were apparent on his 2002 follow-up Swarm & Dither, where an acoustic and digital hybridization could be heard among surprising tracks like a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black."
