"THE IRISH ARE drinking less Guinness - official. Figures just released by Diageo - the company which owns Ireland's national tipple - show that sales slumped by six per cent.
The reason? Paul Walsh, Diageo's CEO, revealed that the typical 21 to 25 year old is failing to follow his father's footsteps down to the pub. Instead, "They're often putting their money into electronic stuff such as iPODs," Walsh told the FT."More

As previous reported before, Michael Moore don't mind people downloading his newest Movie Fahrenheit 911. Download his comment here

“I don’t agree with the copyright laws and I don’t have a problem with people downloading the movie and sharing it with people as long as they’re not trying to make a profit off my labour. I would oppose that,” he said.

“I do well enough already and I made this film because I want the world, to change. The more people who see it the better, so I’m happy this is happening.”

Kostenlose heise-Bücher zum Deutschland-Start von Creative Commons
via rohrpost mailingliste:

Stand-alone software, which can be downloaded for free from Sony's new Sony Connect online music store, is needed to purchase tunes. That could be a turn-off for consumers, according to Jarad Carleton, an IT industry analyst with Frost & Sullivan in Palo Alto, California. More here: www.technewsworld.com

Allofmp3 is an online music store, but it's so cheap that it might as well be free. You pay by the gigabyte; 1 gigabyte costs $10. That means that 10 bucks gets you about 18 hours of music (at 128 kbps Ogg Vorbis -- more than good enough quality for me, YMMV). It doesn't get cheaper than that.

It's a Russian company so you may not trust them, but you don't have to -- you can charge your account using PayPal, so they don't ever get any personal data from you other than your email address.

They have a huge selection of mainstream and non-mainstream stuff, about 200,000 songs in total. And the best thing - it's not illegal. (This is not so much important from a moral but from a practical standpoint - they can provide reliable high speed access to the goods.) They have a licensing agreement with the Russian Organization for Multimedia and Digital Systems which allows them to sell these songs in bulk; the same kind of agreement Russian radio stations have. Is there something as a "Hall of fame for idiots" ? Ann Coulter sure would fit in there. I never heared of her before untill I read some of her quotes at submunition.com. Some examples:

“We hate them. Americans don't want to make Islamic fanatics love us. We want to make them die. There's nothing like horrendous physical pain to quell anger. Japanese Kamikazes pilots hated us once, too. A couple of well-aimed nuclear weapons got their attention. Now they are gentle little lambs.”

“We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. We weren't punctilious about locating and punishing only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That's war. And this is war.”

“We need to execute people like John Walker in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed, too. Otherwise, they will turn out to be outright traitors.”

Potato is the first system for selling and reselling mp3 files. When you register at Potato and pay for a download, you also get a personal link, to place on your webpage. If someone buys a track from your webpage, you get a certain percentage but also the artist.

I hope I was able to explain it. Better read the the project homepage, which is in german and englisch. Potato is a cooperation between 4FO AG and the "Fraunhofer-Institut für Digitale Medientechnologie". "MP3" was also invented at the "Frauenhofer Institut".

"Remember that pricey Superbowl ad for Pepsi, the one that promised to give away 100 million iTunes songs to consumers who found a winning message under Pepsi bottle caps? Maybe Pepsi should have tested the concept before they shelled out millions on the Superbowl ad. In the last week, people have been complaining that the sugary soda is responsible for erasing the ink on the inside of the bottle caps making it impossible to tell if they've won or not." More

The BBC has confirmed that it's investigating the use of peer-to-peer file sharing for the distribution of its programmes.

It follows director general Greg Dyke's announcement at the recent Edinburgh TV festival that the Corporation is planning to make its archive accessible via the Internet.

BBC new media director Ashley Highfield revealed the first details of the plans at the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam over the weekend.

He said the BBC was developing a 'super EPG' that would work on any platform and let users record programmes as with a PVR.
