At protest-records, look under the site statement and then the notes about their logo. It seems that this logo cannot speak for itself. Pathetically, the designer's explanation for it falls back on a highly selective list of links on the background to recent events in the Middle East. In particular you'll find an interest in material throwing doubt on whether Saddam Hussein was responsible for the deaths of thousands of Iraqi Kurds in 1988. Pacifism is one thing, but it seems that Thurston's friends would rather believe a vile dictator's version of events rather than historical fact. Specifically in this case their vague "protest" is no more than support for Ba'athism at its most murderous. In case the links are removed in future, for reference here they are: [paste] please examine these links to further your understanding of world events: english.pravda.ru english.pravda.ru www.africaonline.com www.alternet.org www.nytimes.com www.onlineopinion.com.au www.transnational.org abcnews.go.com www.pbs.org www.observer.co.uk www.guardian.co.uk www.observer.co.uk www.guardian.co.uk www.guardian.co.uk www.guardian.co.uk www.observer.co.uk www.observer.co.uk www.guardian.co.uk [end paste] I've followed Sonic Youth since the late 80s. which link OK, I don't have time to fish through all these links. So far, they don't appear to contain anything most of the world doesn't know. Which link leads to the "material throwing doubt on whether Saddam Hussein was responsible for the deaths of thousands of Iraqi Kurds in 1988."? ... link

this one I didn't read the comment of "preavy" until today, because I am still in a very bad condition, but it seems he is refering to this link: But it seems that the person who is using the name "preavy" (not even leaving an email adress) didn't read the statement of protest-records and the one at alternet very well. It's not Saddam saying "it wasn't me", former CIA man Stephen Pelletiere is saying, that there is the possibillity, the Kurds beeing killed by Iranians. "i say "fuck the flag" because it's lost its meaning." These are the words of chris habib on protest records. The american flag is not my flag, so I am not in the possition to they fuck the flag, but I agree 100% Chris Habib on the second part. Maybe it hasn't lost it's meaning, but it changend. The USA is one of the oldest democratic countries in the world, so people can be proud about that, but when I look at it, it doesn't remind me on the great country it seemed to be when I was ten, it reminds me of ice cream, t-shirts brands like hilfiger and all that unnecessary stuff. The flag is used to sell steaks, beer, cars, t-shirts, coffe cups, toilet paper and everything else wich is commercially availible. I think chris habib has a very similiar point of view. I am not american (I am german if you don't know) but I was living and working in the USA for 6 great month. So next time, please carefully read the text you are talking about, before making comments on MY webpage. Or even better, go to some political forum and don't use my webpage for comments which are not based on facts. ... link

Protest Records Swen, I registered for your site and gave my email at that point. It is p_reavy@hotmail.com My original post may have been unclear due to haste. Broadly I think we are in an international war of ideas. Saddam reportedly got a kick out of watching Westerners march in support of his regime being left alone. Hence burning flag logos strike me as stupid and giving succour to those who would happily murder any Westerner, American or not. If you don't want people to comment on the links you post, when they are to record labels which are blatantly political and provocative, then I would gently suggest not having a comments section below those links. I do wish you a speedy recovery from your illness though and the best of luck with your site. Peter ... link ... comment |
