allmusic.com: "The self-described "power ambient" duo Sunn 0))) (also known as Sunn) formed in the mid-'90s and is headed up by guitarists Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson. These two are both experienced players in the doom metal underground, having been involved in numerous bands in addition to running the noted doom label Southern Lord. Anderson's credits include Goatsnake and Thorr's Hammer, while O'Malley has been involved with Thorr's Hammer, Burning Witch, and Khanate, among other bands. Sunn specializes in extended, trance-like drones that are built up around low-end guitar and bass feedback. Their main inspirations are the early works of the Melvins and, even more so, Earth, who are alluded to in some of Sunn's song titles." More

southernlord.com: Japanese cult favourite sludge/doom rock trio Boris take their name from a song on grunge godfathers the Melvins' "Bullhead" album. They also have a lot in common with the Melvins musically, including a fondness for heavily down tuned guitar/bass tones and exceedingly slow tempos. But they also incorporate elements variously drawn from other sources, including psychedelic rock, punk, noise, minimalism, pure sludge-drone music à la Earth, and more.

Spex.de: Das ungekürzte E-Mail-Interview mit Antye Greie-Fuchs (AGF) und Vladislav Delay (VD), anlässlich ihres ersten gemeinsamen Albums »Explode«, über Ein- und Zweisamkeiten, Kommunikationen und Explosionen, Mode, Mut und Dualitäten." Mehr

From southernlord.com:
Boris was ultimately inspired by the Melvins (in particular the Lysol album) and Earth. Besides pure heavy riff-droning bombast, Boris adds a unique experimentalist ambience to all they touch. This perfectly explains their involvement and collaboration with such cult-experimental artists such as MERZBOW and Keiji Haino. Every release from this group is different. Each is colossal in it's own right, but Absolutego is the group's finest achievement. Words do not describe this mammoth accomplishment. Earth moving drones swallow the listener whole, then regurgitate you as a mass of sloth like jelly. More Info

Lately lots of metal bands are featured in the WIRE magazine. Pig Destroyer is reviewed in the March 2005 issue. Phil Freeman , from THE WIRE 252 says: "...playing an astonishingly abusive form of grindcore mixed with more traditional metal".

Combining the stylistic elements of Asian, Middle Eastern, Ethiopian, hip-hop, rock, experimental & electronic music Gang Gang Dance synthesizes a vital and wholly new type of music; rigidly structured yet fluid enough to allow for the members to improvise and take the music in a different direction at a moments notice. Unlike many of their contemporaries this group is more oriented in an uncompromisingly creative direction; a set of compositions is only in their repertoire for a handful of months during which time they are constantly changing and developing to a point of fruition. At which point a whole new set of material is written and begins getting developed, which allows the band to never rest. The resulting performances have created an organic ground swell of congregants eagerly waiting to see where the group will plant its new seeds. This release is but the tip of the iceberg; a vantage point from which to watch the next year unfold for this ground breaking quartet.Read more

I found lots of mp3 files from bands mentioned in that article. Very often a certain CD is referenced, so don't be surprised if the "songs" you can download here don't sound very metal-like, if you are into black metalm (noise fans should give them a try also), try to get hold of a copy of the current WIRE issue and get the mentioned CD. Two of the featured record label are offering many mp3 downloads/streams. Go to :

Born in 1945, Anthony Braxton began studying music at age 17. In 1966, after playing clarinet and alto saxophone in the military, Braxton moved to Chicago and became involved with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. In 1968, he formed his own group, the Creative Construction Company, with Leroy Jenkins and Leo Smith, and released his first record, Three Compositions of New Jazz. Read more + MP3 downloads
